CancerConsultants provides summaries of new treatment strategies as they are discovered and reported by cancer physicians around the world. Our medical staff attends medical meetings worldwide and reviews medical literature daily to ensure appropriate news is provided to cancer patients and their families in a timely manner.

News of the results of recent clinical trials evaluating cancer therapies and supportive care strategies serve to educate patients regarding new treatment strategies for cancer and facilitate discussions with their doctor. Development of new cancer treatments usually begins in patients with recurrent or metastatic cancers. Once the new treatment appears effective, it is applied to earlier stages of the disease or to patients at higher risk of treatment failure.

Chemotherapy May Allow Preservation of the Eye and Avoidance of Radiation Therapy for Children with Early-Stage Retinoblastoma (02/14/2002)
Treatment for retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye that occurs in children, is often successful with surgical removal of the eye and followup radiation therapy. However, this treatment involves the loss of an eye as well as the potential long-term side effects of radiation therapy, such as interference with a child’s growth and development and the occurrence of a second cancer later in life. In a recent study, researchers found that children with early-stage retinoblastoma may be able to keep the affected eye(s) and avoid radiation therapy by receiving 6 cycles of a chemotherapy combination.

Effective New Treatment Strategy for Retinoblastoma Avoids Removal of the Eye and Radiation Therapy in Selected Patients (02/14/2002)
Treatment for retinoblastoma, a cancer of the eye that occurs mainly in children, is often successful with surgical removal of the eye and radiation therapy. Although this treatment strategy is successful, it involves the loss of an eye as well as potential long-term side effects of radiation therapy. In a recent clinical study, researchers found that children with early-stage retinoblastoma may be able to keep the affected eye(s) and avoid radiation therapy by receiving chemotherapy and local treatments (treatments involving just the affected eye(s)).
